First off, a big big fan of sheryl crow...but...bill wither's Lean on me? Done by the 3 palest performers on the telecast? The southern rock/rapper set can keep the abomination of kid rock...but again, the orb's weak, thin and hoarse warbling is truly an embarrassment to this very "soulful" song! Plastic soul...man plastic soul...
...heard on the car radio this morning that bono and the edge wrote this song in one day and recorded it the same day and delivered it for sale on itune the next day. Original... and excellent.
HA! Not to try to change the subject of the thread, but I cant resist! Seems it's not likely that kidman is gonna "Re-retire" anytime soon despite a very dead career...
"EXCLUSIVE: There can be no doubt in anybody's mind that Nicole Kidman's career is in deep, deep trouble. That's because, even though she's talented and used to make $16M-$17M for a lead role in a major studio movie, she's become poison at the box office -- the female equivalent of Sean Penn (but with botox...). So it's very understandable that she feels the need for more career guidance now. Because I've learned that Nicole had made a major change in her representation: she's become a client of Angeline Jolie's manager Guyer Kosinski of Media Talent Group."
I've maintained since last year that jolie has the career kidman very much envies. Kidman during PR last November even mentioned that she wished that the industry would write for woman as they did for men, and even mentioned how they rewrote a film for a male lead to that of a female...for jolie. (Ironically, the film Salt was rewritten for jolie after tom cruise, who was considering taking on the role, passed on it!) So therefore kidman hiring jolie's manager makes alot of sense. But, really, as hard as kidman may hope that this will now get her the films that jolie can get, seemingly now without competition from the likes of kidman, jolie is far more versatile than kidman...jolie can do straight drama...but she also can do action...even action comedy...kidman does her dreary weepy indies...and cant do anything else! It is no wonder at all, therefore that jolie can do a role originally written for a male...kidman can only dream of that.

If Nicole Kidman's career hadn't been in the dumper she would never have done the telethon. She was okay. She read her part but unlike many of the others who seemed to be speaking from the heart, Nicole Kidman was speaking from a monitor. Wearing her husbands over sized suit coat and covering her very large diamond Nicole was talking to the little people who matter not, except she was told they needed to give. What happened in Haiti was a tragedy. You can't say that any clearer. And while I don't think Kidman was the only person to make an effort to appear because it was important, the degree of importance in Kidman's case was to be seen. While it's tragic that we see these types of events more and more this is the first time that I can remember that Nicole Kidman participated.
Why? Perhaps because her husband was going to; Keith Urban has done many charity events. From Katrina and St. Jude's to the Country Music Hall of Fame to Farm Aid, Keith has performed even without asking. Kidman never lowered herself to help with 911 or Katrina. She never gave except for her UN PR work. And doesn't that say it all. So after the telethon is over, Kidman can get ready for her next awards show full of herself thinking she saved the world. Unfortunately she is the type of person that all of the good people helping are up against. This tragedy is not ending because of a telethon, but for people like Kidman, it's already history.
Well, I thought it was a great performance & I'm not patting anyone's back here. If you watched Keith's face as well as Sheryl & Kid Rock's faces you KNEW they were singing from the heart. This touched them. It was their way of helping with the talents they have.
While there hasn't been any big News splash about how much the Urbans gave to this cause I'm sure they gave a nice sum. We don't need to know, it's their business but at least they both took part in their own way. I think as well as every other performer/celebrity that appeared on the telethon they did a wonderful thing. Sure they can't all jump on a plane or boat & go in person to help but they all did something. That's what matters. It was a great telethon & may everything possible get to those who need it most as soon as possible. God Bless them.
I'm going to blame the audio techs for Keith's voice getting lost in the mix. And I'm going to blame Keith for not imposing upon KR and Sheryl to lower the damn key and sing closer to his range. He's taken to singing at the top of his chest voice, and that's where his voice gets thin and breathy.
Much like his wife's, come to think of it...
Anyhoo, the choice of "Lean," was less than inspired, but so were many other choices others made. I was underwhelmed by Madonna, for one.
Aguilera's performance, however, was killer. As was Sting's. Kudos to them.
kidman does her dreary weepy indies...and cant do anything else!
Surely you jest! Didn't you see her tremendous range in "Bewitched"? And in "Australia"? No idies here, simply major studio releases that did NADA at the box office and BUPKIS with the critics.
She's so versatile, she can ruin ANY film!
Now THAT takes talent. Why, she's up there with ... with ... jeez, I dunno...Vin Diesel? Paulie Shore?
PS: I can't WAIT to see how Mr. New Manager works out...
The beauty of music is that we all have different tastes. Likely one of my least favorites was the STRANDED collaboration. But I can certainly appreciate that it was an original song and written very quickly for this tragedy.
I love Lean on Me. I enjoyed the rendition by Kid Rock, Sheryl and Keith. It was my kind of performance. I am not a huge fan of vocal gymnastics so straight forward singing of a song that I enjoy is my preference.
I enjoyed most of the performances, and I believe most of the people who performed were sincere. I think the reason why NK's participation is questionable is because her UNIFEM contributions are so predictable. She has done no field work, other than the ONE trip to KOSOVO in 2006. Almost every time she participates in a UNIFEM PR event, it coincides with one of her movie releases. COINCIDENCE?
I'd say to Anonymous that sent in that note that Nicole has a long-standing friendship with George Clooney. She was there for the 9/11 telethon. She raised funds for the BBC in 07 for a childrens charity. We have no idea how much she gave for Hurricane Katrina or the Haiti disaster. But what I do see is skeptics complaining celebrities should give in private. Then when it's announced actress Sandra Bullock gives $1 mill it "shows she really cares".
I think a fellow poster on E said it best. It's irrelevent what you think of KUNK. People died and this is the kind of thing you are discussing as if it matters. The children who will be eating next week because of money donated by people who heard the story Nicole told or watched Keith perform don't care about your criticism.
Honestly it's sickening. It's no different than any other day around here.

It is the "pat boone-ification" of that performance that puts me off! And it was a less than inspired choice. I realize, alicia keys can be on and do...alicia keys...bono and the edge can pen an taylor made song...but if your involved in an impromtu trio...someone should have looked at the overall fit of a cover song than simply that the title fits the occasion! I simply thought it was pretty lame. And yes, the "merger" and the "melding" of bono/edge rock with the rap stylings of Jay-z...plus the addition on r&b rihanna was very impressive. And, I'm not very surprised to hear that "Stranded" is already the #1 itunes download. IT will be the signature song of the telethon because it was original and the most memorable of the night.

Yes, that is clearly the case, as orb was announced first as performing...and then kidman late in the week. And then she simply did her little usual minimal canned speech and not much else at the telethon. Only pictures of kidman at the telethon were of kidman in front of the camera...and of she and orb leaving! As I mentioned in the last thread...not much commeraderie comes out of kidman!

ITA. Well said. I have never felt that the reasons people showed up or gave $$$ mattered as much as the fact that those suffering benefitted - at the end of the day, THAT is what counts.
Oh yeah, the SAG awards are today...and not unsurprising, kidman is to present! So is cotillard and pen cruz... http://www.altfg.com/blog/awards/marion-cotillard-penelope-cruz-nicole-kidman-998/
...yes, the doomed cast of Nine must "walk the plank" for their failed film. Will it be another 0-fer? I'll tune it just to catch that!
In the letter sent to UM it was stated "Wearing her husbands over sized suit coat and covering her very large diamond....." you can't possibly mean the one that she is suppose to have "gifted" herself??
