...but with less energy and enthusiasm! Also this song highlights why I just could never really get into country music...that hocky, "voice cracking warbling" orb overdoes is really offputting...and the somber and dreary setting... I get the impression that kidman recommended the theme. Who'll give me odds this song makes it onto the "score" for kidman's no doubt equally dreary Rabbit Hole...if it ever gets finished, that is!
Thanks, Maclen, do you have any idea how long it's going to take to get THAT out of my brain? At least two hours of non stop ROCK to purge the bad.
I thought of the score myself. Great minds, you know.
I think he must have gone back to the early nineties and dipped into the collective pool of vintage videos. There was a bunch of the "carnival themed" videos then, Dwight Yoakam for one, and others, did carnivals, do you remember? My hubby and friends like country, and I liked to look at the bottom half of Dwight, (along with a couple million other women), that's why I remember this.
Poor sickly looking thing, she really has sucked all the sexy from him, just as it was written here. Even thought I don't care for the song, I do think it's one of his better videos of late. Interesting use of the faceless actor. It lets the crazies dream. Personally I think the director did a good job of toning down Urban's cheese factor.
"If this is true, it’s just plain crazy. We hear that this ‘married couple’ is involved in more of a business arrangement than a romance. It’s not that unusual, since people have been using marriage for many things throughout history. We just think it’s sad there are actual transactions involved here- the monetary kind, trust us, not the sexual kind. One of the partners is paying the other a hefty stipend as an incentive to stay hitched. The receiving partner needs the money because of a drug habit and gambling issues and the other is inclined to give it to fight off rumors of sexuality/bad past/unattractiveness. Both in the relationship are celebrities, both have been up against speculation, and both are all about the PR to keep the ball rolling on their different needs being fulfilled by the marriage. Not Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise."
Keith didn't write this song, Monty Powell did. It's probably the best song on the album too. Certainly brings back memories for me of heading to the Jersey shore every summer and starting something that can't be finished.
The video is much better than a lot of his stuff. I'm glad he/they stepped out of their comfort zone for the director, he should do that more often.
Keith co-wrote the song. And its one of his best efforts since Be Here. The video is very nice and totally different that his recent efforts. Best song on the CD or on the last two CDs.
Choice said... "have to agree - it does indeed sound like GUITAR MAN. Give me David Gates music any day over Defying Gravity. Sorry Orb."
Definately, Choice, the melody was "nicked"...and slowed down...and the guitar "hook"...is an exact match to the "Man". I noticed the similarity when I actually watched orb perform it on the CMA"s...and I clearly heard that early 70's southern rock feel to it. So, is orb even going to perform this latest single at the Grammys? I cant find anything on that...BUT, taylor swift, of course will be performing! You think that that is an "indication" of how they believe the night will play out? Showcase swift...the predictable and obvious big winner?
...and interesting, besides the obvious sophia loren being present of course...is that cottilard and pen cruz are the only cast members of the film to be present! Not very surprising, when you consider that it was cottilard and cruz who got a majority of the best reviews of the terribly reviewed film! So, what other reason could the so called "international superstar" kidman have for missing out of the Rome premiere? Surely not that tired..."She needs to be in LA because she is presenting at the GG's and it's this Sunday!" Well, Loren is also presenting at the GG's...and cotillard and pen cruz ARE actually nominated for GG awards...and they were at the premiere in Rome! Boy, you can really tell the rats that abandon the ship when they are not "celebrated"... and kidman has a rep for abandoning mediocre work by ditching it!

"Crikey! What an odd guest list. The names expected to turn up to the G'Day USA black tie gala in Hollywood this weekend makes for an - ahem - interesting bunch. Well, hoosier, what can I say...if "guitar man" is stuck in my head this whold past week...well, I;m determined that its stuck in everyones head! So here goes...this part of guitar man...
" Who draws the crowd and plays so loud, Baby it's the guitar man. Who's gonna steal the show, you know Baby it's the guitar man"
is the exact melody of orbs' main guitar riff of his song...and it seems the orb cant help it...was just watching the ellen show, and orb is to be on next mon...saw a promo bit of orb playing guitar on the show, and he's singing a cover of john lennons "Imagine"...boy, very "original!" Now when I last saw taylor swift on Ellen, she pulled out her guitar and instead, she and ellen "impovised" a new song, just for giggles, but still far more original than simply warbling a impromptu "cover"...I would guess swift has the far more powerful impression of being a "songwriter" than the orb!
Maclen and Hoosier Wha is quite funny about the Guitar Man song is that I had been playing Bread in the car a few weeks back after digging out a Bread CD. What a band they were. I would often hum Guitar Man each day during that time, so I know what you are going through Hoosier. Other great Bread songs to me are "Anyway you want me", "Diary" and "Dismal Day". David Gates was an excellent songwriter, and probably didn't need the assistance that Urban does. I better get that CD out again!
I think it's a great song and for a change, a video of equal calibre. I'm glad a new director was engaged to do the video. It worked to try something different.
hoosierlady said... "Isn't it enough that he rapes Dire Straits, does he have to do John Lennon? Make him stop, please. ."
HA! Hearing orb mangle Lennons Imagine...to me...is tantamount to pat boone butchering Little richard and fats domino in the 50's! Years ago I was in a discount store perusing through a stack of old 45 records and was quite excited by seeing 'At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama)'...you know by The El Dorados...but when I noticed it was actually by Pat Boone, I actually droped the 45 as if it was on fire! Not having even heard of the orb before he hooked up with kidman, since the association, orb has pretty much hit me as pretty shallow, one dimensional and basically, a one note wonder. Of course he will never reach the complexity or weight...or intelligence of a lennon, but then, not many can...but really I dont see orb expanding beyond the "holding hands on the porch...meeting down at the boardwalk...sneaking a ride in pop's chevy with his "baby girl"...to wit...from his current cd...
"When i picked you up for our first date baby Well, your pretty blue eyes, they were drivin' me crazy And the tiny little thought that was so amazing Is they were lookin at me."

Yes, Choice, and I'm not even into Bread, but when I first heard him singing his song at the CMA's...it immediately hit me as being very very derivative. And it cant be a good thing to hear his song and have another song...in this case, 70's Bread...stuck in your head!
I got to see the whole video yesterday on one of the country music video channels yesterday & I thought the whole thing was very good. The video was very picturesque & it fit the song perfectly. Keith did justice to the songs lyrics & the video. It all fit well & was a nice to watch & listen too. I only wish that it had come out a little sooner but hey, I'm sure those things don't get made overnight. There are a lot of issues with videos that have to be settled and worked out before it can actually hit the TV. I give TSCA an "A".
There's a reason the fansies over at Monkeyland concentrate on orb's singles as opposed to the orb's cd..."Defying Sales" As it notes over at wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Country_Songs
Hot Country Songs
"This 60-position chart lists the most popular country music songs, calculated weekly mostly by airplay and occasionally commercial sales."
...again, note that the chart is only "occasionally" based on commercial sales...but mostly by "airplay"...ie; "requests"...the orb's fansie site organized "robo calling and robo online voting" concerted efforts explain his "success" with airwave requested country singles charts...or for that matter, the orb's otherwise inexplicable success when it comes to "online voting poll" awards. But as I've commented in the past on this situation..."not too impressed when the orb can win an "online voting poll"...but would be VERY impressed if the fansies could "robo-buy" his cd to platinum status (1mil)...which it still HASN'T attained! The latest numbers, according to Wikipedia, on the sales to date of Defying Sales...
"The album has sold in the US 692,000 copies as of December, 2009."
Not too hard to figure why orbs cd sales are WAAAYYYY down in sales to his 2mil selling Whole Crazy cd and not too surprised when i read that orb will also be touring again this year and will most surely add more dates throughout the year...
...but it's not as easy for the few fansies to "robo-buy" 308k cds than it is to freely "toss their cookies" and swamp an online poll or robo call-in to country radio stations and inflate the orbs mediocre singles.
Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock share actress award
"Musical movie Nine, starring Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman, failed to win in any of the 10 categories in which it was nominated."
Wow...many nods for so little...well, no actually...for nothing! Boy, 10 nominations!...HA! I'm willing to wager these 10 nominations were announced BEFORE Nine was released and was an utter critical and box office failure...just as the golden globes were announced! Well well, lookie here....
"This year, nominees for best picks in movie acting and directing were announced on December 14, 2009. Leading the nods were the star-packed musical Nine and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds with ten nominations each,"
..and I wonder...were anyone from Nine even at these awards? I figure the rats are all avoiding this sinking travesty! and a quick perusal reveals...
..yep...it seems only cottilard, representing Nine, had the class to show up! And it is in LA...so where was the "slinking rat" kidman? Obviously the shame, the stench of this film is too much for her...even for her usual attention whoring! So, definately, I'll be watching the GG's tommorrow...and only for the off chance host Gervais singles out kidman for her "changing face"...I'm keeping my fingers...and toes...and eyes crossed for that one!
"- In case voters were actually watching, there was not one, but two commercials for Nine with quotes blasted across it reminding them that it was nominated for five Golden Globes and TEN "Critic's Choice" awards. A reminder that the BFCA vote early and vote often for films deemed early in awards season to be potential Oscar contenders. That's 15 nominations between the two groups. The film has only received, appropriately enough, nine other mentions from other groups this season. Up In The Air, Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker and The Young Victoria only received one spot each. Oh yeah, the Weinstein's The Road also received two commercial spots. Hope voters were paying attention, because Nine and The Road didn't win a single award.
So, apparently, weinCo films Nine and The Road had an extra spot each during this telecast, but could not win one stinkin' award? Seems weinstein can now simply "buy" tv spots...but not awards! To quote my fav musician John Lennon..."Instant Karma's gonna get you, gonna knock you right on the head!"
Your'e right rememberwhen, this is the sign of the "end of days!"...well...simply in that it is for kidman...she is so desperate she has even reduced herself to this embarrassing and humiliating display of playing the "dancing monkey" to orbs "organ grinder!" Wow, it is actually almost unbearable to watch that "degradation" as kidman moronically flopped around as orb does his very bad version of "Down Under". Seriously, kidman is less "comic relief" here than "court jester"...doing and saying anything to survive. And you know this is for pure cheap desperate attention when it is clearly so "out of character" for kidman...and when this was announced it was simply kidman appearing...but she brought in the orb for this obvious...and laughable "stunt!"

Ha! So, perhaps a little preview of tommorrow night Golden Globes awards telecast from the Broadcast Awards last night?

Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock share actress award
"Musical movie Nine, starring Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman, failed to win in any of the 10 categories in which it was nominated."
Wow...many nods for so little...well, no actually...for nothing! Boy, 10 nominations!...HA! I'm willing to wager these 10 nominations were announced BEFORE Nine was released and was an utter critical and box office failure...just as the golden globes were announced! Well well, lookie here....
http://www.chiff.com/pop-culture/critics-choice-awards.htm

So, definately, I'll be watching the GG's tommorrow...and only for the off chance host Gervais singles out kidman for her "changing face"...I'm keeping my fingers...and toes...and eyes crossed for that one!
...pps...
this is too much fun to quit now!

Low-Lights At The 15th Annual BFCA Awards
Enough said.

Keith your career is finally over!
Sorry, but I think that's the first time we really get a glimpse of them being themselves and not putting up a front for the paps.
Interesting for sure.

Keith your career is finally over!
And you know this is for pure cheap desperate attention when it is clearly so "out of character" for kidman...and when this was announced it was simply kidman appearing...but she brought in the orb for this obvious...and laughable "stunt!"

...oh, I get it now...was just reminded of this over at hollywoodelsewhere.com...

BFCA Indication
...yes...kidman wants her own viral video!
Sweet Jesus, did everybody else see that video debacle?
If you don't recognize the melody, let me bring you up to speed: That's the sound of Keith whoring himself.
