Someone needs to speak to Keith...

I have been talking to so many of my fellow Urban fans this weekend; some skeptics; some bunnies; some not quite sure of where they are; and so many of them are so confused about Keith Urban right now. Why?

Because Mr. Urban played the Opry on the 27th and made the occasion a time to publicly worship at the altar of Nicole Kidman. He had an opportunity to push his single, which is stalling on the charts, and kiss the Opry's provincial but powerful ass. He failed on both accounts. Yes, he sold out the Opry on a weekend when they don't generally sell out. Yes, he showed up and was prepared to play his two songs. There was some speculation that because the show wasn't going to be on TV that Kidman would stay home with her family and the baby; well, it didn't happen like that.

Keith came out and sang a lovely version of Sweet Thing - his attempt at Taylor and Miley type song-smithing. His voice was good; he looked okay; the crowd was into him. Then the jackass opened his mouth. Something to the effect that he was there because his wife asked him to call the Opry and ask to play because her family was in town, and they wanted to see him play at the Opry. Why the hell did he do this? Shut the hell up about that woman. Didn’t he complain in the past about hating to be invited to parties just to play like a ‘monkey on a stage’?

Dear reader, he is not a member of the Opry. He just called them up because Kidman decided he should? WTF? What was more likely was that he and his management wanted him to play the Opry to promote the struggling single and they gave him a number of dates from which to choose. But Keith doesn't want you to believe that; nope, the wife has the power to dictate when and where he is going to play. Why, oh, why?

Because he can't be anything other than supportive spouse right now. There I said it. I am not afraid. It doesn't mean he loves her or even likes her, but what was he supposed to do? The smart thing would be to ignore her and the marriage but this whole last week has been nothing but Nicole Kidman resident of Nashville, Tennessee week. We had sightings of her at bookstores buying last minute Christmas gifts. We saw Kidman, her parents, sister, niece and nephew and Keith walking all over Nashville. We had the Kidmans at lunch at a local Nashville restaurant on Christmas Eve. The report was that they seem so relaxed with one another. Why do they keep telling us that about them after almost four years? I don't get that; unless they really aren't relaxed with one another? We have the photos of Keith bogged down with a car seat and diaper bag and Kidman having a hard time swallowing her communion wafer after Christmas morning Mass. Then we had a sighting on Christmas Day at a local Nashville movie theater where they skipped the ticket line and went right into the theater. Nicole and Keith were accompanied by her father and niece and nephew again. But that occasion served a dual purpose because a local gossip column mistakenly said the kids were actually Bella and Connor. Guess someone needs to share that the Cruise children are actually older, and Connor is not so pale. But the seed was sown wasn't it? The day after Christmas we had a sighting of the Kidmans again enjoying the sights of Nashville.

Have you seen these pictures available on a French gossip sight? Keith looks not so terrific. Okay, he looks sad and wasted. Why? Was Christmas that tough? There are rumors that the Kidmans are living in two different residences these days. The farm and the big mansion. Are they together? And why after living in Nashville for this long are they touring historic houses? Oh, Kidman is showing how valuable she can be to the Nashville economy by highlighting the sights? New career, Nicole? Perhaps…or just more PR to get people's minds off what a failure you are? She is not going to fail at being a wife, is she?

I do hope that the Opry isn't a preview for the new tour. Dedicating a song to Kidman that he didn't even write; a song that was written for someone else's wife is just sad. If saying that her family was there when there have been no sightings of them there and only a brief sighting of Kidman leaving with Keith after the drudgery of his five song performance was over is any indication of the next few months, Urban is going to be as much of a loser as his wife.

Shut up and sing, Keith. And next time talk about yourself and not about those around you, even if they are paying your salary.

Who else was on the stage on the 27th? Who helped him sell out the Opry?

Perhaps he is ready to retire, because he is setting himself up nicely for just that.

Did he seriously say that on stage?
This is the same stage that Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Hank Snow, all of them worked and struggled and played for? He said that she called the Grand Old Opry and ask if he could play because her parents where in town? OK, that's it. I knew country music was going to the dogs, and now I'm sure. You might as well move it to L.A.

What a fruitcake. What a pretty boy. What a hypocrite. Yes, he wanted to be a country musician. Sure he did. He liked Glen Campbell sure he did. He's just as much of a worm hole as she is.
I think they are perfect for each other.

I just don't know what to say. . .

I will still be shaking my head tomorrow. . . .

What an ***hole.

Ha! Oh yes, kidman "asked" him if he could sing for her family on the opry...and then "asked" the orb to dedicate the songs to her...It's a given who wears the pants between these two pale celebs...the orb is simply a "grandmama's boy"... quite content to be "managed" and "handled"...for no doubt otherwise he'd be vomit stinkin' wasted, face down in the goat's pen every other night. He's the monkey playing the accordian to kidman's organ grinding...all for the amusement and benefit of her family.

Of course it's now foreign to Keith's nature to express appreciation to the FANS who bought the tickets and filled the audience... he couldn't possibly be there to entertain us now could he? When is the last time Mr. Kidman thanked the people who buy his product-- weak, benign and rehashed as it is these days? He hasn't thanked his fans since Kidman smothered is life.
Well soon enough he will find Kidman is the ONLY person in his audience... and there's photographic proof that she finds Keith's music so dull these past few years that she falls asleep.

...also very funny is it seems kidman's photo op's options are really dwindling... beside this non televised orb opry appearence...the only other ops were the kidman friendly leak and sneakers...JJ and GG led family xmas and xmas mass photo ops...not too much other coverage for the hohum kidman doings and wanderings...

I think I might prefer:

vomit stinkin' wasted, face down in the goat's pen every other night

At least every other night I'd have my self respect.

Keith you have officially hit an all time LOW!

You have issues with ppl saying you WORSHIP her, but yet you just make it worse????

There was a moment between he, loretta lynn, some other ppl and a guitar pick AT the opry. It's a fight he's been having for quite some time. The only reasoning I have with what he said was Sarcasm? I dont think he ever really talks to US at all. I think anything he says is usually meant for upper mgmt to hear and it's always smartalike backtalk in some candy coated way.

What's the guitar pick thing at the Opry about?

And he doesn't speak to the audience/fans. I don't think he knows how, he's not comfortable chatting on stage - hence the same drivel coming out of his mouth for years on end. I would be curious to know what "conversation" with him is like with people who know him.

Years ago (10 yr) I met Keith in a social situation and spoke with him for a couple of hours on and off. He was a funny and likeable character (a bit shy, but very nice). What I hear now doesn't sound at all like the man I met then.

The Opry dedication was poorly thought out and shows how out of touch he is with his fans and with the status of his career. Who are his advisors and does he listen to anyone?

Why is this man shooting himself in the foot with the constant references to Nicole? You don't hear Trace say his wife picks his songs, or hear Brad tell an audience that he's on tour only cause Kim's schedule allows it.

Has he no idea how unprofessional he sounds? And how henpecked?

Or is there truly a contract in play?

Imahick said...

If there was a contract I don't think he'd be screwing up his own career just to promote the fairytale union or the wife. To me, it's counter to the purpose of a PR marriage, which certainly would have been to promote BOTH of their careers, no?

It may have started out that way, but I don't believe that is the primary purpose anymore. It seems like Keith is satisfied to coast, enjoy the lifestyle and essentially jeopardize his own career to support NK and her sagging career. This is simply an opinion...but that's what it looks like to me and I think that's what irritates many of his fans.

We have invested alot in HIS career and it's frustrating to see him throw it away, while she appears completely self absorbed.

One thing appears certain. He has earned and continues to earn the #1 pussy whipped award he won. I think he'll take the title again in 2009 unless he makes some changes!

Happy new years eve, fellow bloggers!!!!
Would you all believe me if I told you Keith married Nicole because he thought it would help his career. By having a 'sexy' movie star on his arm? The opposite has happened. Because of her dwindling 'star' status and reputation as a sexless skeletor who can't act, it has brought his career down. You know, by association. Am on the right track? Please tell me I am wrong, and it is really because he can't record good songs anymore?

Nicole might like to listen to Cate's take on plastic surgery:

No, I'd say you were spot on choice...his album sales started to tank right after he wound up in rehab 4 months after he married her... he couldnt reach the #1 spot until he reached back to release a years old "popular" song he had done pre kidman. Now we are at the point in this celeb "relationship" when one in the couple is in a far more precarious position...the career is in the dumps...which is hers. You see it all the time when the wife celeb becomes far more sucessful that the hubby celeb...take the recent oscar winner witherspoon...halle barry previous...jolie. But the thing about the orb...I have no dillusions that he has the backbone...the will...the fortitude to not put up with I certainly believe is kidman's absolute self absorbed and unbearable vanity that she must be a horror to live with right now...and I dont believe whatever the orb was to do...no matter how self destructive or whatever indescretion he may indulge in..kidman is too neurotically obsessed with "image" that she wouldn't walk away from this "union" out side of homicide...or even "genicide!"... and by that I only mean something very extreme.

Choice - initially that is why Keith hooked up with NK. He wanted, no, craved the attention that would come from dating a Hollywood "A" list actress. From here is where I tend to differ from the skeptics on what happened next - I don't think he counted on falling for her - maybe under her spell, hell, who knows - either way, it happened. I think what rehab did for him was teach him to throw away the self-absorbed Keith that didn't know how to give of himself to another and the new Keith emerged that found it was a good feeling to be the giving one. Unfortunately, he has a wife who feeds on the receiving but so far he has been happy with this. You can point out an unhappy face in a picture, but in reality if someone were following me around all the time with a camera they wouldn't be getting a happy face from me all the time either (life just ain't that way).

The best we can hope for is that her career is in the shitter for a while and he siezes the moment - which I think is already in the works when you look at the tour he has planned, he's definitely got his sights on a big year. Hopefully he can learn to leave the wife out of the tour (heard she's headed to some UNIFEM thing this summer, let's keep the fingers crossed!).

Imahick said...

You watch. He'll be there holding her hand in Kosovo or India or wherever. He'll arrange his tour around her UNIFEM obligations, assuming she actually fulfills this.

I agree with you that this is not just a contract. If there wasn't some sort of attachment (I'm not sure I'd say he fell for her, but I think he has affection for her and feels grateful and therefore obligated to her) why would he still be with her, as his career sinks? Something happened in rehab and the sober Keith has turned over a new leaf. As you said, unfortunately, the object of his admiration is a self absorbed "me" girl.

I hope he does grab the opportunity to advance his career ... but I still fear that he'll be unable to put enough effort into it between NK support functions.

According to extracts from the new unauthorised Biography about Keith, it was not love at first sight. He waited some 6 months before calling Gran for a date. Obviously he had other things on his mind then, or he was nervous.

This book will be somewhat of a read when it comes out on 5th January in Australia. It is called:
"Fortunate Son: The Unlikely Rise of Keith Urban".

Not sure if it will be released in USA straight away. Anyone have any thoughts on what else this book might contain? How he can improve his career?
