Don't Ruin Yet Another Fan Favorite, Keith

Keith Urban is asking for fans to submit videos of themselves singing You’ll Think of Me to be shown on the video screens during his upcoming tour.

http://tinyurl.com/cc9bo3

You'll Think Of Me is one of Keith’s signature songs. It was on the Golden Road CD from 2002. Even though he didn’t write it, he performed it as his own. He added a verse when he sang it live that was heart wrenching and emotional. He even won a Grammy in 2006 for his live performance of the song. It’s a song done best in a darkened arena with just the lights on Keith. It’s powerful and moving.

So now he wants to muck it up by showing fans on the screens behind him singing along? Bad move, Mr. Urban. If you see this at a show, please come back and give us your feedback. Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised, but I don’t see how.
Please take the poll on the right!

Ha! Looks like the orb, not only continuing his plundering of his more successful past for far more succesful material, but obviously his people have been checking out this site and the tone of the ex fan's issue of his constantly neglecting and ignoring his fans. And since his fanbase has about shrunk by over 3/4...( recall his Be Here cd sold 4 mil since 2004..his latest Defying Gravity at this point will be lucky if it can even sell one mil)...the rehashing of the better past is the word of the day...

Is this so it can play behind him, or is this so he can go off stage and take a break while the fans do his work for him?

Sorry, no respect left.

Horrible idea. It's going to ruin the song. This sucks. YTOM has always been my favorite

I dunno...maybe it's the only way he can remember the lyrics...

I think we need to WAIT and see what it will be like before we judge. Keith's music CANNOT be ruined or overshadowed by any scenes behind him up on a screen. The man plays the H**L out of "You'll Think of Me". It's almost like he's singing it for his own personal reflection(remembering, dwelling on something in the past). Most times he closes his eyes and just plays the ending like he's reliving something in his own life. He gets extremely emotional and extremely INTO the playing of the song and playing og the ending especially. Honestly with Keith's masterful playing, AWESOME singing and poetic writing I honestly don't think anything could ruin a Keith performance. The man IS A MUSICIAN from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. I think it's SO ALL TOTALLY his special individual talent that whatever he does with the rest of his life he will ALWAYS be remembered as a GREAT musician. Like I said I'll wait before passing judgement on his choice of adding fans on screen behind him.

This makes me sad. It is one of my favorites live. I will always remember the night he was so into it he called "her" (whomever he was singing about) a bitch. That was my favorite show to date. Heard that the stage is going to be bigger and better--we'll see.

I think it's an odd selection for a sing along or for fan made videos. There are so many other songs he could have chosen and are more "fun". It's hard to imagine what he's going to do with fan videos of YTOM. This is an emotional song and one that really needs everyone to concentrate on KEITH's performance. I guess we'll find out next week...

Maybe NK doesn't like the emotion he puts into it and this is a means of toning it down.

I'm going to a show next week, so I can report. I agree that maybe we should wait and see before we comment, but I also agree that this is NOT the song to have fans in the background. I've seen him sing this live a number of times, and even after a few years, that emotion at the end of the song is still SO strong. I keep thinking that maybe he's thinking about Niki Taylor, but what do I know!!

He called her a bitch during the song?? LMAO!! I never knew that!

What else?

It's a show.

He's a performer.

You pay your money, you go in and watch a guy play his instrument and put on a SHOW.

That's all. He does not bare his soul for you. He does not show is weak vulnerable side for you. You get to see what he wants you to see. He is putting on a SHOW.

He is a musician, yes, and a fine one for his genre, I suppose, if you like that type of pop/bubble gum music, but he is not this sweet, innocent, down home country boy.

Pay your money, enjoy his show, but try to remember this is what he does for a LIVING.

Imahick said...

Exactly...it's a show. He's putting on a performance. Whereever he pulls that emotion from, we don't know. But it may well be a past relationship.

Either way, it's one that really pulls in the audience. I hope this video of people pretending to be him, their kids pumping their little fists in the air etc. isn't a distraction from one of the highlights of his show. He won a Grammy for his performance of YTOM.

I guess we'll know soon enough. I look forward to your report, frankie.

I'm sorry but that man has bared his soul and a whole lot more since I was a fan in the early 90's. Maybe that's why every relationship he had seemed to sour- he was married to Us and wanted to keep it that way. I dont mean that in a fanatical kind of way. Women who have watched this guy through the transitions can tell you he put a lot of time into the experience. Maybe that's why he has so many pissed off women wanting to know his whereabouts, LOL!! Notice they all say he needs to "come back home" in one way or another. Nope, this is all his fault.

If he wanted ppl to just enjoy his music and that's it, that's all he should have given everyone from the beginning. Oh that's right!! It WASNT working. He had to create an image and whore his way into it all to really sell things.

Personally, I think it was all for his Nashville 'paybacks'. All the failures and bad memories. Now he's just having a hard time shaking ppl off once he's USED them. He wants ppl to listen to him, and take him seriously.

I think most, if not all, of what we read in the tabs have absolutely nothing to do with us. I think they speak in code to their ppl and peers. How many times have we seen NK shooting the finger? I know you guys have noticed it! And there is a reason they buy all the specific titled newspapers from the Starbucks they go to for that day? We've seen the mirrored pics and news pieces Kurban has had with TomKat! NK mentioned wanting to retire right before they were seen starting this whole charade. I think NK is trying to go out with GRACE and MERCY. We all know how much she loves GRACE and MERCY.

If this whole thing IS a deal, I think something serious happd for Keith to get on the wagon about it all. Maybe some things were going to come out about him that he wanted buried.

As far as I'm concerned, they can both junkie-stumble off into the sunset. I dont care. I know Keith has a lot of energy to give, but I swear that man passed his best a long time ago. My fav will always be 1995-2000 and again in 2003-04.

So, are you saying that what he was doing in the early days was not an act? It was, in your opinion, in the beginning, the real deal? Remember, I came into this later, doing research on a job that was to do with the fanatical idol worship of Americans, so my angle in the beginning was the NK show, (and how crazy was that? that is what piqued my interest).
To me, seeing this from the outside, it has been disingenuous from the day 1. I see it as a huge manipulation of his fan base from the beginning. Aussie boy comes to US to find his country roots, struggles, etc., but behind the scenes, breaks up with his long time fiance, and starts dating arm candy as soon as he starts to become popular, and then the whole thing becomes a media circus and he marries a meal ticket and starts whining about the necessity of touring.

What part of this do I have wrong?

When did he respect his fans more than love his fans' money?

When he NEEDED them.

Before his last stint in Rehab, Keith did at least show some gratitude towards his fans, and also when you paid for a show, you got a show. After Keith came out of Rehab you basically take your chances going to a show as to whether Keith the grand performer shows up or Keith I'll just do enough to get by shows up.

I have no idea whether it's because he doesn't feel he has to work as hard because he's married to Nicole Kidman or if it's because he has a problem connecting with that particular performer and still be sober.

When I pay my money to go to a show, I expect to see the performer that I know Keith can be. I agree with people who say that Keith the live performer on a bad day is better then many other artists live on a good day, but that only goes so far. Keith needs to understand that he can't keep coasting and expect to keep all of his old fan base. You can only be disappointed so many times before you decide that you would rather live with your memories of Keith the great performer then to see him one more time live and the disappointing performances start to outweigh the good performances.

When Keith is on and present as a performer there is nothing like that in the whole world, when he doen't reach that level that he set for himself, the fan leaves feeling like they have been cheated. I would never want Keith to go back to the self destructive behaviors which drove him to rehab the last time, I just think he needs to reconnect with that person who didn't coast through a live performance.

Well, you may be in luck, then, because it is my opinion that if he wants to stay as a viable country artist, this is the tour he needs you again.

If he will be happy staying home, writing, producing and mentoring new artists, then, he can repeat his past 2 years.

Time will tell.

I hope you are right hoosirlady. It would be nice to have him on his game for this tour instead of hit and miss. While I do feel that Keith Urban on a bad day is still better than everyone else on a good day I still miss the way he was. I tend to blame it all on Kidman beacause I never could stomach the witch, but it could just be his being sober that has changed him I don't know. What I do know is that when she's at a show he's not as good as when she's not. He's distracted,he doesn't interact with the crowd as much and he doesn't play as long. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone makes the mistake of hiring her to ruin a movie or two and she stays the hell away from the tour.

And this is what we'll see: tons of his fans singing his song, dressed up and playing the guitar.

And they all look like Brad Paisley.

Hmmmmmmmm only 11 videos so far. I guess there are alot of people who don't think it's a good idea.

I imagine there were a ton of entries for the DGB project. That totally made sense. This.. not so much.

...well, shutupandsing... it's already up to....oh, boy...14 videos now. Not too bright of the orb to set up yet another tangible measurement to how he's fallen in popularity or relevence. Well, at least he can look on the positive side, it wont be too difficult to choose between the videos...he can just use them all...and even repeat them over and over and over...hey now long is that song... and doesnt his tour begin soon?

Urban Myths said...

Yeah, maclen, the tour begins Thursday in Connecticut. This video, if it happens, won't be ready to go for a while.

We plan to do tour date blogs for a while to see what reactions and reviews we can gather for a while.

Judging from the two pics on Getty, Ms. Kidman didn't look all that excited to be at Jazz Fest yesterday...

Yeah, just about sums up kidman's career...shallow, bland, humorless, empty headed and a "CGI-orama" production. Just like the orb, kidman is destined to be a "viral" dud! And the only 4 lines she has in this little commericial can be her epitaph to anyone who has ever gone to one of her dreadful films...."What did you expect?"

banbotox said...

I had to laugh at that line maclen..."What did you expect?"
Seriously!?! Sometimes kidman makes it sooooooo dang easy.

Chris Bertolini said...

Just curious if anyone has given any thought to some of the performers KU has opening for him on this tour (Dierks Bentley and Jason Aldean, to be specific) and the fact that they both have a very large fan base and i do believe it is most likely that they will do at least a 50/50 draw for the crowds that show up at the ones they are opening...this being said, if those fans aren't there to see KU and decide to leave, what do you think his reaction will be to all those empty seats?

Well, Urban Myths, this little gimmick I'd be willing to wager, may not even make the tour at all at this pace...

Yes banbotox, and that futile and lame attempt at "humor" is further negated by kidman's self concious, awkward "laughing" after that very ironic line... it spotlights her actual acting talent...as with this little commercial...as kidman asks..."What did you expect?"...well the answer is, as usual, not very much!

Urban Myths could you please fill us in on the Jazz Fest issue in your next entry?

Ya know we were supposed to get a load of pics and news from this trip of theirs and nothing came into play except some pics that (surprisingly) havent been ripped off the internet yet

A440 said...

Were we? I heard nothing of the NO trip until after pics had been posted. Was this trip supposed to be some big production?

stillhopefull said...

I don't think a big production was to be made of these photos'. That is, until they came out.
They just seem to scream, the one of NO-balls is giving an earful to the usual one with the balls. As in..."shut the he** up Bi****, this is what I wanted to do. NOT really interested in what you think or even that you are here. I'm here for the preformance's. Either go home or act like you like this!!! YOU DUMB SHIT!!!"
(that ending is just something that I can only hope he would do...sad to say, I really don't think he would have enough balls to stand up to her to do so. Evan though he should and she deserves it.) Still not gonna happen!
