Hop on Over to the Dark Side

We understand. You like Keith Urban. You have seen him perform numerous times. You have read all the articles about him watched him on TV. You want to be happy for his success; in fact, in a way it is your success.

You saw him almost ten years ago or you started following him around five years ago. You believed in him. You saw a guy who was humble, who fought daily with those demons both external and internal. He seemed like he was a sweet guy and then.....

In January of 2005, Keith meets a semi-disoriented Nicole Kidman at a reception and she slips him her phone number. Of course the fans didn't know about this back then. Keith used to keep his affairs private: the normal woman, the supermodel, the girls from the back of the bus. He was discreet and respected those relationships and encounters and his fans by not making his fame his personal life. Little did we know that his date was often sitting in the same aisle at an awards show as he was. He didn’t need to flaunt them. But Kidman changed that; it became all about Kidman. They were seen here or ate there. He flew to her movie sets and she came to his concerts. Why do we know this? Because the actress called her PR people and made sure they knew.

Of course the actress knew how to use fame to get fame. She chased fame much like Keith chased the crack rocks in that house in Nashville. She fed his need to be admired; she convinced him she knew the way to do it. Something inside of him must have been telling him different for he chose to drown those voices out so much so he needed rehab.

Well, here we are, it's 2008, and Kidman and Keith are supposedly the third most powerful couple in show biz. Pat yourself on the back! You and I helped put them there. This site, those web hits, all those magazines; they led to the honor by Forbes magazine. But is it an honor? Don't you feel a bit used? This is the performer you loved, but it’s not about his performance anymore, is it? We don't get to read glowing reviews and interviews about the music.

Nope, it’s all about feeding Keith Urban's biggest addiction, fame. Yeah, he has always had that one but now he has an enabler who he blindly believes saved him from being someone else. Perhaps that person would have said “I like making music. I want my career. I want to go to the Grammy’s and I want my privacy”. But instead, it’s all about feeding Nicole's ego and he gets the crumbs left over. Do you really think he wants to sit around and watch her get photographed? I don't.

And if you, in the last couple of days, have been scratching your head and wondering why he would be sitting around watching her work while he could have been at the most important evening for a musician, then welcome! You are beginning to become a skeptic. Keith Urban could have very easily flown to LA, picked up his award, and flew back to her side. He chose not to and that right there is the problem. The flame of her fame has taken over any common sense this man may have had. He needs help and let’s hope that the addiction to fame that both Kidman and Urban have isn't passed on to the baby. Kidman seems to have lost the battle for stability. Let’s hope there is still time for Keith. As for you, what can you do? Well, that is pretty simple, and you have to do it on your own. Just remember you aren't alone and in the end it will be helping Keith.

Amen.

The Famewhores have not made one cent off me nor anyone under my influence for two years. The only thing worse than be used is being callously taken for granted. One expects it of Kidman but I despise this inflamed character flaw in Keith.

"Bunnies" bounce back. He wasn't at the Grammy's was he? Showing up shows respect for the industry and his fans. Keith has either become too weak or too ambivalent for either to be a meaningful factor in his life.

It is apparent that Kom no longer wants to be on stage. He needs to be on stage. He needs the fix - the high of being on stage with women drooling over him. He needs that to feed his ego. Apparently, he isn't getting that at home. I will not be putting money in their pocket just so he gets his ego fix on stage.

Well Umyths I wont be taking your advice. Sorry. When Keith releases a new album Im buying it. When he comes to my town for a show I'll be there. And when Nicole releases a new movie I'm going to buy a ticket. These two will always have fans whether you like it or not.

You actually pay to see her flops? Why don't you just flush your money down the toilet - her movies are worth the same as the crap in your toilet!

maclen said...

Another good post, Urban Myths. It is just pretty common knowledge in lalaland, as it is in Nashville, you may be a rising star one minute, and a hasbeen in a matter of moments. All that it takes is a couple of bad career choices, and you'll be yesterdays news. Whether its a country singer marrying the pretentiously vain and plastic actress... (recall zellweger/chesney) or the country singer trying to go pop, or rock, or... "latin pop"...(think urban/furtado... good luck with that, orb)... It's not uncommon at all, and very recognizable when the shaky ones are flailing to deal with the missteps of bad choices.

KUsnob said...

Oh, ever consider that he wasn't invited? Ever think that he didn't want to attend? Ever consider that he might have found that he's finally happy with his home life and he's found a way to be both a "Keith" at home and a "Keith" on stage? Suppose not? Would it have been nice to see him? Sure.

Didn't hear you complaining that any other country artists weren't there. Don't hear you complaining that Dierks who was nominated not once, but FOUR times didn't get to do anything other than present. Don't you find that to be a slap in the face to a artist who not only is talented but in the face of the country music society is a member of the Grand Ol Opry and should be reconginized by his peers of musicians alike?

But lets continue to complain about the fact that Keith sat his aussie bum on the couch drank his aussie non alcoholic beer and ate at Outback for dinner before the show with his pregnant wife, whom by the way he has no fear of telling you that he loves.

Well, considering how many people on average go to see her movies, it is the same thing.... but really, kidmans main problem now, besides being bland, pretentious, and boring... is that she was so overexposed in just the 2 years of her "run", people jsut became so irritated, and disinterested.... I find it pretty easy now to say her next movie will be another flop. And now urban will suffer the same fate...

isitoveryet said...

kusnob said: Oh, ever consider that he wasn't invited?

He was invited - he was nominated. Don't blame the Grammys for his lack of appearance because he didn't get an invitation! What the Grammys have failed to do is realize that country music is bigger and better than rap music. They need to realize that and move away from featuring rap - that's why viewership is down!

OMG that is the funniest thing I ever read.

I will be buying KU album and seeing him in concert.

Whether you support him or not is up to you.

He was nominated for an award, he was invited. The Grammys are a big deal and she is not due till July? He should have shown up. Granted, country is not well represented on the Grammys but everyone else (except George Strait) seemed to have been there.

doublewide said...

the famewhores won't be making a cent off of me either. i consider sitting thru one of her heinous movies a form of torture.

very good blog, btw

KUsnob said...

isitoveryet - you saw the invitation? You were there when it came in the mail? Maybe you are the postmaster general?

What I find so hard to believe out of most of the UM girls is your unwillingness to accept reality? You complain about Hank & Evie and I give you reality. You disallow or ignore. I give you reality about the music business and the Greatest Hits, you ignore. You complain about Grammy's, I offer you Dierks being ignored, you ignore.

What's in your reality that you see that's so much more different than everyone else's?

isitoveryet said...

Step away from the Kool-Aid kusnob! You mean to tell me that an awards show will nominate an artist, but not give them an invitation to the show? What color is the sky in your world or the color of your sunglasses?

I saw Dierks interview on the red carpet, and he was thrilled to be there!

I have some interesting facts about Keith Urban too. Things you wouldn't want to hear or would deny.

KUsnob said...

Believe me, I don't need to know any of your false or spun lies of Keith. And to be honest with you, I don't care about his personal life. I don't care that he wasn't there, because he wasn't going to perform. If he was invited to sit and be a member of the audience and chose not to, well then that's his choice. If he was invited to perform and chose not to, well then that's another thing all together. But since you neither work for the Grammy's nor can you confirm or deny that that was the case, then the discussion is mute.

Of course Dierks is going to say he's honored to be there, what's he suppose to say, "I think it sucks they won't let me perform, I'm looking forward to being nominationed but I know they won't award anything to me either."

I come over here and most of the time I laugh at the blog and then sometimes I get so frustrated at the obvious neglect that you so called "Urban" fans subject people to with your ranting about things that shouldn't matter.
And here's the deal. Who cares that he's married, who cares that he loves to have his picture taken now, who cares that he's married to someone who makes shitty movies, who cares that he dedicates a song to her every night at his shows, you know it's coming (same song, same set) go buy a beer, who cares? Stop going, stop buying, stop looking. I get that it's like a car crash that when you drive past you have to see, but how many times are you going to look before you keep going to your destination?

doublewide said...

ok kusnob....you're getting on my nerves.....we address the dierks thing and it isn't what you want to hear.

i tell you what...i have spent a buttload of money on this man. I CARE THAT HE WASN'T AT THE GRAMMYS, I CARE THAT HE'S MARRIED TO A SHITTY ACTRESS, I CARE THAT HE DOESN'T CHOOSE TO NURTURE HIS CAREER OR PUT OUT ANY HITS. I CARE THAT ONE DAY, SHE'S GONNA KICK HIM TO THE CURB, AND THEN WHAT'S HE GONNA DO BECAUSE THERE IS NO CAREER TO GO BACK TO BECAUSE HE WAS BUSY CATERING TO HER SCRAWNY ASS. I CARE THAT I SPENT ALOT OF MONEY GOING TO THE MONTY POWELL SHOW AND KEITH WAS 21/2 FREAKIN HOURS LATE BECAUSE OF HER NEEDINESS. IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YA????????

i don't want to go buy a beer, i want a changed up set list and some new kick ass songs. so as long as the employer wife has the upper hand and for some unknown reason, he doesn't even resemble the man he used to be, i'll not spend any more money on the dickhead.

don't believe the lies said...

Bravo Doublewide!

It still amazes me that the bunnies cannot or will not see a change in Keith the Artist. He IS NOT the same. Woopty Doo he has a personal life...he always has. It's just that now it interfers in everything he does. Whereas before it didn't. He seemed to be able to keep the two seperate.

I have not and will continue to not spend money on anything he does. I just can't back him and his antics at the moment. Someone said earlier that if he puts out an album they'll buy it. Even if it sucks and isn't worth the money your sill going to purchase it? It just seems like your trying to prove a point and ultimatley your the one who ends up losing. Keith could care less because he has drones like yourself and the others that get pissed at this blog to bow and pray at his feet and purchase his crap albums.

So continue to try to state your opinions here in opposition to what "the Skeptics" say but it's a battle you'll never win here. Go somewhere else where like minds can think alike.

I agree with you doublewide. The man needs to go back into rehab to end his dependancy on Nicole.

maclen said...

Whoa, doublewide, very strong comment there. Its just too bad for urban that most of his former fans are probably about as passionate as you are regarding his lack of quality music, his new valet duty for a washed up actress, and his loss of any originality. If urban does prefer the life of simple domesticality.... he should just save time and retire to that tennessee ranch now, because the way hes headed, he'll be in that situation anyway, and best he should make that decision, instead of waitng for the rejection of his missing former fanbase.... but I doubt if he will, he's not really into decision making right now, just taking orders.

KUsnob said...

Well doublewide, look at it this way...
When she does kick him to the curb it'll be the best album of his career. Course, by your standards it'll be over by then, but it'll atleast be one of those critcally acclaimed albums that the fans(you)don't buy.

It really bothers you that he wasn't sitting in the audience?

Atleast he showed up. I went to a GNR show once. No Axl. To each their own of course, but I don't see how you ever get to enjoy ANY of the music if you spend so much time hating and concerning yourself with stuff that (besides his music and I'll give you that)ruins what came before her. But I totally trump your Monty Powell thing. haha

Perspone said...

KUSNOB WHAT BOTHERS US IS THAT KEITH DOESN'T REALLY SEEM TO GIVE A SH*T ABOUT HIS CAREER. HE DOESN'T CARE ENOUGH TO RECORD A DECENT ALBUM, HE DOESN'T CARE ENOUGH TO SHOW UP TO SHOWS ON TIME OR TO EVEN REHEARSE FOR SHOWS, IT'S BEEN REPORTED THAT THE BAND EVEN LOOKS BORED DURING HIS SHOWS NOW.

ok, while we're trumping each other. i won tickets to the Dallas/Oklahoma football game in october right after the pics of them together came out. it was a small venue and i was elated. i never win anything. the night before, we found out he had blown a vocal chord and was on TOTAL VOCAL REST.(we were about 3 1/2 hours away from dallas, and packing to leave), then the day of the concert he was seen, and we have the pics to prove it (thanks to her paps on speed dial)out with the skank just having a big time....i loved his music (at that time) and i was taking my daughter with me to use the other ticket. needless to say, the whole thing was very disappointing and hurtful...that was one that that WOULD NOT be rescheduled, they got toby keith, instead....

we skeptics have feelings, too, and you have no idea how much we miss the man he was. other artists get married and they stay the same person and still crank out the hits....keith is not one of those.

people like you think we're all just a bunch of jealous bitches that he got married, blah blah blah

well, you're wrong. so you go on and enjoy your concerts. good that you don't care about his personal life. go buy your beer. i really don't care. i call em as i see em, and keith has left the building. his personal life and idiotic PR marriage has robbed him of his muse as i see it. if you can be content with no great new music except a lousy cover song on the GH album, then so be it.

KUsnob said...

Doublewide I'd enjoy talking to you outside of here, because there's so much more than this blog could offer. But here's the thing. Either you can sit and dwell on the obvious or you can look beyond it.

And like I said before. The greatest hits is never really intended for the "fans" or the "real fans" of his music because you'd already own everything. Did I feel jipped on the album? Damn right. Could I have used a couple of other things on it? Shit yeah. I would have preferred, a live version of You'll Think of Me, instead of what there was. I would have loved a couple of live covers he does as some bonuses or maybe a couple of unreleased tracks. But it wasn't there. But Greatest Hits are really for those people that don't buy his albums. Some person who only listens to the radio and only buys the hits albums.

I know this is about the Grammy's and how he wasn't there. And how she made him not go. And who knows, maybe they have EVERY intention to go and she had morning sickness. And lord knows, we've all had it. Or atleast most, and she can't be above morning sickness no matter how perfect she thinks she is. I don't like her. I don't defend her. I just don't let her effect the way I hear my music. If I did that, I'd have to put away nearly all of the cd's I owned because they all get married sooner or later and they all make decisions I may not approve of.

doublewide said...

well kusnob, it's good that you can enjoy his music. bully for you. i hope one day i can enjoy it again, too. i am becoming more interested in other artists at the moment, and am enjoying them alot.

ok i'm done here for the night! gonna go enjoy some cheetohs and big red soda in the trailer. maybe catch a little AI.....

carry on carry on....

banbotox said...

Wow doublewide!! Good on ya-tell it like it is honey!

We skeptics can connect the dots-just like everyone else but unlike some, we aren't happy to continue believing the lies. Quite frankly, it's silly to think that Keith performing covers is any thing to be happy about-he did that many, many years ago in bars-for next to nothing.

If kusnob and reality want to spend their hard earned cash on rehashed, repackaged music, so be it. There will be plenty of copies for them to purchase. In fact you can buy my copy and my seat at the next gig.

If you know the reason why Keith stayed away from the grammys kusnob-enlighten us. Maybe you are an employee of Bormans? And in case you haven't noticed, this blog is about Keith not Dierks, not Gary, not Kenny or any other performer.

Kendra said...

I will say one thing, Banbotox... singing covers isn't a sign of anything bad at all. Sting sings covers at some of his shows. Johnny Cash covered a Sting song. Bryan Adams covers "Walking After Midnight" among other things. Keith sang Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" at a concert. Big name people with big talent cover other people, it's a sign of love and respect. Music is a universal language. Doesn't everyone sing a Beatles song once in their career? Same thing.

Also, the greatest hits thing... my friend is a musician who spent a few years in Nashville (not in the country scene). He said that the music industry is crap right now, losing out huge on money and going down the tubes. The only way to stay floating right now is for them to produce greatest hits albums. My friend pointed out to me that almost every CD by any major artist in the last year was a greatest hits collection. Whether an artist likes it or not, that's the way the record company wants it and if you're owned by a label, you do what the label says.

It has nothing to do with Keith Urban. It has to do with the economy, illegal downloading, greed and the music industry.

maclen said...

If there is an overall decline in cd sales, and there is, I seriously doubt it is because of rinky dink reasons as illegal downloading, greed and etc... it is the refusal of the music companies to clearly see the direction of future media sales. And I dont think the RIAA's strategy of sueing college students for illegally downloading online and taking their lifesavings of a couple of grand is going to solve their problems. The mistake began a few years ago when the music companies went after Napster and it's file sharing. After getting it shut down, they failed to recognize the online potential of online sales and downloads... the future of music sales is not in cds... but online downloads, to their iphones, cellphones with wi-fi and internet... and only now are just beginning to try and catch up... with deals with Itunes and other online downloading services. And as for specific musicians, like urban, you still need to look at specific reasons for his decline in cds sales, because not everything is going to be affected the same way by the usual industry troubles or missteps. Urban's Be Here cd, released in 2004, sold 3 mill... His Love, Pain cd, out in 2006, only sold 1.3 mill... and the GHits so far has sold about half a mill. Now as for the quality of the music itself is just subjective to each persons tastes and perferences, but his cd sales is an actual, real and tangible decline. And that is why he is now touring with underwood, and later chesney. He evidently sees that.

doublewide - I'm buying you a beer the next time we meet up! Excellent points, and I couldn't agree with you more sweetie!

As far as the band always looking bored on stage, when Chad was still with the band - remember - he exited when Kidman made her entrance? He was always smiling ear to ear while performing - you could see he loved it. Jerry and CRod always looked like they were totally into it - not so much anymore!

notachance said...

OMG - Chad smiling ear to ear???? You do know that was because he was boinking a different girl in every city whilst engaged to the rich country gal back home, right??? His exit had nothing to do with Nicole.

If you really want to get down to brass tacks, the REAL change in Keith happened when he fired his original band in Aug 04 - weeks before his first headlining gig and had to hurriedly put together a band. That's when Mark, Chad, C-Rod as y'all love to call him, & Chris McHuge took the stage.

Stop blaming Nicole for taking away "your" Keith - he's been gone for a long, long time folks and he ain't coming back.

isitoveryet said...

notachance - you obviously don't know the real reason for the old band being let go. The old band . . . the new band . . . Keith was Keith. Things didn't change until she came into the picture. Tensions were high backstage when she was on tour with him. Someone asked CRod (that name is given to him to keep him and McHughe apart) how he likes Kidman. She had been on tour with him for a month. He said he only talked to her three times - that says a lot right there!

White Trash we can't help but be involved in Keith's personal life it's plastered all over the tabloids every week because he's turned into an attention seeking famewhore just like his wanna-be an important actress wife. Since his personal life seems to be dictating his professional life, and Keith is under performing in his professional life due to either laziness or the fact that he just too exhausted from attending to the demands of his personal life, I think that gives fans who have invested time and money into him the right to a least comment on the fact that his last album and his live performances don't live up to the standards that he himself set. I'm still in wait and see mode, I don't think he's completely a lost cause as an artist, but if he doesn't do something soon that tells me he want's to continue his career, why should I wait around for him to realize he's pissed it away.

Geez, I thought CRod was adorned on him by the monkeys like he was ARod the baseball player (who is a hottie). Not to say he isn't a nice guy - turns out he is.

I'm not saying Nicole is an angel in all this, I'm just saying that she is not 100% to blame for the loss of "your" Keith.

And I do know the reason for the band being gone - McHuge.

The band thing, that's all McHuge,100%. And you can ask just about anyone who knows him, past & present. Ask his kid.

kendra said...singing covers isn't a sign of anything bad at all.

I agree kendra, Keith does some really great covers. What I was trying to say is that doing a few is fine (esp. in a live show-everyone usually knows them) but using covers to fill up a cd of greatest hits-which aren't even all hits-is not the direction any of us thought Keith's musical career would take.

Kendra said...

In fact, I would love to hear him do that Maroon 5 cover again... I love Maroon 5 but in some ways, I liked Keith's version better. Very sad song and his voice seemed perfect for it.

Actually, of Keith's covers on a CD... my least favorite was his Elton John cover... that song was fine how it was and I felt like the Keith version added nothing. I have listened to it about three times. And two times were in someone else's car.

For me, it's not about NK or that he's married. It's not even so much that I didn't like LP&TWCT cd, although the GH CD was a sad offering.

For me, it's that he seems completely disinterested in his career. He shows up the day of his shows...we have pictures of him with NK in Oz on the 12th...and they're 15 hours AHEAD of us.

The weather on the east coast hasn't been great. He may not think he owes his fans much, but the least he owes them is to take the show seriously enough to come a day or two ahead to make sure he isn't weathered out. It's ridiculous to still be in Australia 1 day before he is scheduled to perform...and he has a 24 hour flight to get to NYC.

He doesn't care enough to change his show. It's the same damn set list and the same damn songs as last year. Oh...no...that's right...he and Carrie are doing the Brella song. Whooptiedoo. It's a sad thing when a country "superstar" is doing that kind of crap!

He didn't care enough to attend the Grammy's and pick up his award. Say what you want, but I'd like to think that his music means something to him. Honestly...to me, it looks like he is completely disinterested in that and his career.

Where is his DVD? It sounds like he's going to record his next CD mainly in Oz...

He seems to have no identity himself anymore. It's all about Keith Kidman.

For me, the fact he's lost his identity and seems completely fine with it is a huge disappointment. I enjoy artists who are passionate about their music and who want to make new music. I enjoy artists who take their careers seriously and participate in that career. He is an observer now. He plays some shows because he needs his adoration fix...he needs to play to an audience and get that feedback. But it's no longer about his music or his career...it's all about feeding the "hunger" for attention. Then he can go home and hold Gramma's hand and fetch her toe nail varnish.

The man who used to live to play is gone. Pure and simple. He has moved on and left behind a shell who is satisfied with a life catering to a shallow self absorbed manipulative cow. Congratulations there, Mr. Kidman.

"White Trash we can't help but be involved in Keith's personal life it's plastered all over the tabloids every week because he's turned into an attention seeking famewhore just like his wanna-be an important actress wife. I'm still in wait and see mode, I don't think he's completely a lost cause as an artist, but if he doesn't do something soon that tells me he want's to continue his career, why should I wait around for him to realize he's pissed it away."

This is my point. Maybe you shouldn't care so much. It's not healthy for him to have these so called "skeptic" fans ingratiate themselves into his personal life and I can't imagine the time and effort it takes you skeptics to constantly pick apart his very existence - that must take away from your own lives - if you have one.

"The flame of her fame has taken over any common sense this man may have had."

Keith is a grown man who is quite capable to think for himself and from what i've seen the last 14 years has quite a bit more common sense then some others around here.

"He needs help and let’s hope that the addiction to fame that both Kidman and Urban have isn't passed on to the baby."

Please, let's leave the child out of it! People who have known Keith even before the glitz and glam know of his deep love for children.

You all know Keith is passionate about whatever his focus is on and has an addictive personality..are you surprised about his addition to fame and those who are famous do know that there are both pros and cons.

"Kidman seems to have lost the battle for stability."

Pot calling the Kettle black isn't it??

First of all, I’m not looking to ingratiate myself into his personal life, I’m not looking for anyone’s favor, I am simply stating my opinion. Since Keith is a public person and has taken his personal life very public, then I have the right to comment on that part of his life. As for your insinuation that I myself as well as the other skeptics on this board must be a pathetic group of people with no lives in the real world, well that’s just a typical personal attack made by those who do not agree with our opinions. You say I shouldn’t care so much, I shouldn’t care that I spent money on his last album only to find that he didn’t even bother to make an effort to continue the quality of music which was recorded on his previous albums. I shouldn’t care that on one occasion I drove 300 miles to see Keith play, only to be treated to a substandard show because he could not bother to show up on time to do a proper sound check for said show. I shouldn’t care that on another occasion, I again attend a concert only to get another substandard performance from someone who used to be a phenomenal live performer. With each concert the ticket price goes up and the quality of performance goes down. I shouldn’t be upset about that. It seems someone thinks that since his face is plastered all over the tabloids that means that he can raise ticket prices, but he doesn’t have to expend the effort to put on a decent concert. I’m sorry but I do have the right to care that Keith Urban seems to be looking at his fan base as an ATM machine, rather than remembering that same Fan base is responsible for him even having a career. You can have all the talent in the world, but if someone doesn’t go to see you perform and bring other people to see you perform, well then you don’t have a career.

Actually, he's given a guitar away at each show so far this tour. Last night made the fourth. Apparently they are not "his" guitars, but a new gimmick.

Maclen, he has nothing scheduled beyond the stadium shows with Chesney this summer. He also has no new music to promote, so why tour?

Why tour indeed.

"Many of the people in Madison Square Garden were Carrie Underwood fans, and they proved it by drifting out during Mr. Urban’s set; by the end of the concert there were patches of empty seats throughout the arena."
